From our new Editor-in-Chief:

J.A. Windham

The past year should serve as a sharp reminder that ideas shape our world—and that we need champions for the right ones.

When jihadists massacred innocents at Charlie Hebdo in France, or tried to murder cartoonist Bosch Fawstin for drawing Muhammad at a contest in Garland, Texas, campus social justice warriors were quick to cry about a need for “tolerance” and the evils of “Islamophobia.” Few spoke up in favor of free speech and free expression.

When stories broke of black males dying in altercations with police (some innocent victims, some criminals)—when some officers were then hunted and murdered in cold blood—when violent riots broke out in Baltimore, injuring cops and destroying private property—young people across the country screamed in one breath that #BlackLivesMatter, and in the next that cops were racist, tyrannical, even downright evil. Few had the courage to stand up in defense of law enforcement, or the sobriety of mind to ask whether someone other than police might also deserve blame.

When tales of rape and sexual assault began to run rampant across our campuses, a new wave of feminists hijacked our discourse and blasted the term “rape culture” into common usage. Few stood up and asked them to check their premises.

This fall’s issue of The Undercurrent is a tribute to those proud few young advocates for free expression, for law, for reason—and to their growing movement. In this issue, we tackle the jihadist threat to free speech, the dangers of paternalism to law enforcement, the questionable premises behind the “rape culture” activists, and offer bold alternatives of our own to each.

But this new issue is also a tribute to the promise, the hope, and the beauty of good ideas. In a stunning portrait, The Undercurrent’s Eric Rosenberg kicks off our new effort to more often recognize ideas worth celebrating, with her tale of Adrianne-Haslet Davis and Hugh Herr’s triumph over tragedy.

Grab a copy of The Undercurrent and one for a friend. We need more champions for the right ideas—we need you, your minds, and your support, to keep our movement growing.

My best to you,
